No Phyto-plankton, No Reefs = No You, No Me.
The temperatures of the seas have been getting warmer and warmer, which has been leading to the death of an enormous amount of marine life, phyto-plankton and corals on a global level.
Not to mention the atrocities happening as a result of all the garbage amassing and toxins pouring into the waters.
However, with so much focus on whatever’s going on in outer space and all the satellites now needed to make sure people can talk to their toasters and play inane, highly-addictive games without interruption even when 100 miles from the nearest town, a significant amount of focus has been lost on what’s happening right here at home within our oceans.
Now check this out.
Fact: even though our oceans make up roughly 71% of our Earth’s surface, scientists estimate that only about 5% have been explored by humans.
It gets weirder.
As much as 80% of all the world’s oxygen is created by ocean phyto-plankton, of which, nearly half of that gets utilized by marine life.
These oxygen-yielding phyto-planktons also play another crucial role in removing carbon from our air (about 40% of all the Co2 produced!!!)
Feeling squeamish yet? We are.
Now let’s go back to the beginning… the part about how the temperature of our oceans rising every year is killing off the very phyto-plankton that we need to produce the oxygen we breathe.
But… not a whole helluva lot is being done about it as things like social media, self-driving cars and talking toasters have been prioritized.
How’s that math going here, buddy?
There IS a project called “Seabed 2030” that aims to map the entire ocean floor by 2030.
The ocean… floor?!? Da fuq?
This isn’t a normalish post for The Optimism Lab, however, we’re very passionate about the health of our oceans.
If anyone has any knowledge or suggestions for us as to anything we can do to help make things better, please reach out & let us know! We’d love to help in any way we can.
Thank you <3
